      Designer Profile

Laura Jenkins Thompson is an internationally known designer, author, and teacher specializing in the areas of heirloom sewing, smocking, and embroidery for hand and machine from Charleston, SC. For over 20 years, she has been teaching classes for SAGA, EGA, the Martha Pullen School, the Costume Society of America, Bernina University, Sewing at the Beach, and countless workshops from coast to coast. She also has been hosting her own bi-annual workshop, Stitchin’ Charleston Style, for 16 years. Mrs. Thompson holds a BA in Fine Arts and a Masters Degree in Special Education. She is a certified Master Teacher and still teaches art to children part-time.  She is also an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston.  Laura learned hand sewing at the age of eight, has studied needlework in Paris, Italy, and Ireland and researches her passions constantly. She has published numerous smocking design plates, embroidery patterns and leaflets, duplicate stitch plates and booklets, and needlework books. Cactus Punch has created 3 machine embroidery discs featuring her heirloom designs in their Signature Series. Since 1988, she has written articles for Sew Beautiful magazine and has been featured in Australian Smocking and Embroidery and many other needlework publications. She also owned Laura’s Closet, an heirloom sewing shop, in historic Charleston. Laura’s dedication to volunteerism is as impressive as her devotion to needlework. Besides serving SAGA on the national level since 1985 on the Artisan committee, she continues to serve on the Board of Directors of numerous charitable organizations and also state universities. Awards for her volunteer service include receiving the prestigious Order of the Palmetto by the governor of South Carolina and having her book, Joseph's Charleston Adventure, named the "Official Children's Book of Charleston".  Even with her busy life, Laura still has time for her husband, Joe, of 32 years, financial dean of the MUSC College of Dental Medicine, and son, Jenks (the original inspiration for her designs), a cardiology fellow in Lexington, KY.
